Traditional silica-based ODS columns containing hybrid silica require "end-capping" to reduce "residual silanol groups" remaining on the silica surface after introducing the octadecyl group. Traditionally, surface treatment methods using methylsilane compounds have been employed.
However, from the perspective of reversed-phase separation, the silica surface ends up with two types of hydrophobic groups: those derived from ODS ligands and those from end-capping, which can result in uneven hydrophobic interactions. This can adversely affect peak shapes and theoretical plate numbers.
Instead of using classical methylsilane end-capping, such as trimethylsilyl groups (TMS), an innovative end-capping method using polar groups (ethers, hydroxyl groups) has been developed and applied to Cadenza CX-C18. The hydrophobic groups of solutes primarily interact with the octadecyl groups (ODS), while the hydrophilic groups interact electrostatically with the polar group end-capping structures.
As a result, improvements in peak shape and theoretical plate number for highly hydrophobic strong basic compounds are expected.
Additionally, the spatial localization of hydrophobic/hydrophilic groups on the stationary phase surface may enhance the recognition of solute stereostructures, potentially leading to separation characteristics distinct from traditional columns.
Cadenza CX-C18 with this novel end-capping method expands the world of versatile reversed-phase separation.
